The Al-Farabi Scientific, Educational and Cultural Center (SECC) was established by decision of the Academic Council of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" on February 27, 2019 (Protocol No. 7, item 19) as a service unit within the meaning of Art. 8, para. 1, item 8 of the Rules for the Structure and Activity of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski".

 

The center has the following goals and objectives:

• Promoting of the prestige and popularity of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" in the Central Asian Science and Education Area and the Kazakh National University "al-Farabi" and the Central Asian Universities Partners in the European Scientific and Educational Area

• Developing cooperation between educational institutions in partner countries

• Interaction and coordination in the areas of its activity with universities, state institutions, non-governmental organizations, foundations, etc. In Bulgaria and in the countries of Central Asia.

• To support the academic mobility of university professors and students between Sofia University and partner universities in Central Asia for participation in internships, seminars, study and research trips, joint teaching work.

• To coordinate the research and teaching work on current issues with the partner universities of Sofia University in the countries of Central Asia.

 

ACTIVITIES:

In order to achieve its goals and to fulfill its specific tasks, the Al-Farabi Scientific, Educational and Cultural Center organizes various academic, scientific and cultural events: Specialized seminars; Round tables; Training; Video conferencing; Cultural initiatives, etc.

  • Digitization and Internationalization of Higher Education in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Academics from Sofia University and from Leading Universities in Central Asia, and Iran Share Innovative Practices

A series of scholarly webinars organized by the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology with the participation of the Scientific-Educational and Cultural Center al-Farabi and the Center for Eastern Languages ​​and Cultures of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski ” as part of the project “Digitalization and Education in the Conditions of the Kovid-19 Pandemic: Practices and Innovations in Higher Education in Bulgaria and the Countries of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan) and Iran” will begin on May 14, 2021. They will include representatives of universities from Central Asia and Iran as well as scholars from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ”.

The aim of this project is to create an opportunity for critical rethinking, analysis and exchange of experience in regard to the digitalization of the higher education in Bulgaria and the countries of Central Asia and Iran in the conditions of a pandemic in the last year and a half. The joint organization and participation in the webinars, the scholarly dialogue, will offer new opportunities for the development of the cooperation in the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), which plays an active role in supporting the education systems in Central Asia and Iran. The forums will initiate the establishment of a partnership network for the creation of joint programs and research projects through the exchange of experience and the involvement of experts in applying for international educational programs.

The webinars will be held in English, and only in some cases the guest speakers will use Russian, but with a presentation in English. Each webinar will present a different country of focus. The first partner country to be represented is Kazakhstan. At the meeting on May 14, 202, lecturers and researchers from two of the partner universities from Kazakhstan - Kazakh National University "al-Farabi" and Kazakh National Pedagogical University "Abai" will take part. Two more webinars will be held till the end of the academic year 2020/2021: May 28, 2021 with universities from Uzbekistan; and June 9, 2021 with universities from Iran. At the beginning of the new academic year there will be two more webinars with partner universities from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

The organizers invite professors, doctoral students, students from Sofia University, other universities in Bulgaria, Europe, Central Asia and Iran and all who are interested in the way higher education has changed in the last year and a half to join the discussions.

  • INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION: FIRST ONLINE SEMINAR ON PSYCHOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY BETWEEN SOFIA UNIVERSITY AND KAZAKH NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

Continuation of the program for development of the international cooperation of the Scientific-Educational and Cultural Center al-Farabi with universities from Central Asia, on the initiative of Prof. Dr. Irina Koleva, Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of History of Sofia University " St. Kliment Ohridski ”an online seminar was organized with students and lecturers from Sofia University and the Kazakh National University al-Farabi.
The topic of the seminar within the courses on "Ethnopsychology" and "Ethnopedagogy" was: "Ethnopsychological characteristics of the Kazakh family."
Moderators of the online seminar were Prof. Dr. Irina Koleva and Violeta Dobichina, Director of Al-Farabi Center.Prof. Dr. Koleva opened the seminar and introduced the guest Prof. D.Psych.Sc. Mayra Kabakova, Ethnopsychologist, from the Kazakh National University al-Farabi, who was invited to present her monograph "Psychological features of the Kazakh family."

The participants in the webinar from the Bulgarian side were: Chief Assistant Dr. Kremena Yordanova, students of the Bachelor's Degree in Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology and History and Philosophy.

The participants in the Kazakh side, the lecturers Assoc. Prof. Dr. K.E. Basibekova and senior lecturer K. Musa, students majoring in Psychology, Department of General and Applied Psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science of the Kazakh National University.
After an introductory lecture by Prof. D.Psych.Sc. Kabakova, a conversation was held on the problems of the family in general and the family of the Kazakh ethnic group in particular. Questions were asked and scientific theses were expressed.

The participants in the online seminar, students and teachers, agreed that such meetings on such topical issues of ethnology and cultural anthropology between European universities and universities in Central Asia are useful, informative, of mutual interest for the development of intercultural dialogue and communication in scientific plan. They stressed the need for their continuation.
