ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Radiophysics and Electronics is established in 1945 as Department of Applied Physics at theFaculty of Physics and Mathematics of the time. Its mission was to ensure the full training in the area of Electrotechnics and Radioelectronics of all Physics students. The first head of the department was Prof. Emil Djakov. In 1949 the department is transformed into Department of Technical Physics. In the period 1950 - 1960 the research and development work begins and is conducted till today. The teaching of the students is assisted by the excellent textbook, written by Prof. E. Djakov, and the laboratory manual, written by K. Stamenov and T. Stojtschev - lecturers at the department. Gradually the budget staff is increased and is 22 in the 90-ties.

The last 5 years are marked with clearly defined research directions in the field of the Microwave Physics and Technics, the Physical Electronics and Plasma Physics, the Plasmochemistry, the Magnetoelectronics, the electronics circuits and devices and the Digital Signal Processing.

The department maintains intensive international contacts and cooperation with universities and research institutions in Germany, Poland, Japan, Portugal and other countries. The department has a high qualification teaching staff of professors, associate professors and doctors of sciences. Successful training and preparation of PhD's is also accomplished. The scientific production of the department is published in many famous magazines, journals and monographs, cited all over the world.

The movement to bachelor and magister degrees training has introduced new ideas for the transformation of the teaching programs of the department and has outlined new modern specialization's, for example "Electronics and Communication Technologies". Computers are widely used in the teaching process and students are interchanged with west-european universities. The department participates in bulgarian and international competitions. In 1995 the department has entered its half century anniversary and is prepared with new ideas for the next century.

This will provide Bulgaria with excellent qualified physicists and engineers and will lead to remarkable science research and practical achievements.
