Bulgaria ranks among the EU’s top 5 at one of the world’s most prestigious AI conferences

Bulgaria ranked among Europe’s leading countries in terms of research presence at ECCV 2026, one of the world’s most prestigious conferences in computer vision and artificial intelligence. With 10 papers in the main conference programme, INSAIT at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski,” ranked 5th among EU research institutions by number of accepted papers.

By this measure, INSAIT ranked ahead of a number of established European research centres and universities, including EPFL, the Universities of Bonn, Edinburgh and Copenhagen, École Polytechnique, and Sorbonne University. Also ranking below the Bulgarian institute were research teams from some of Europe’s largest technology and industrial companies, including Bosch, Siemens, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Ericsson, and Volkswagen.

At the European level, only institutions from the continent’s research elite in artificial intelligence and computer vision ranked ahead of INSAIT. These include Technical University of Munich, ETH Zurich, the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Imperial College London, and the Max Planck Institute.

ECCV is Europe’s leading conference in computer vision, held every two years and attracting leading researchers and technology companies from around the world. The 2026 edition took place from 8–13 September in Malmö, Sweden, with thousands of participants from academia and industry in attendance.
