GATE Institute "Big Data for a Smart Society" is a research institute established in 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria as a joint initiative between Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski“, Chalmers University of Technology and Chalmers Industrial Technology (CIT) Research Institute, Sweden.

The mission of GATE is to:

  • Develop and conduct research and innovation in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Create an ecosystem by being the link between academia, government institutions and industry in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Serve as a catalyst for high value-added economic growth based on innovation, digitization and entrepreneurship in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence across a range of economic sectors.

GATE creates added value in the following four strategic application areas:

  • Future Cities
  • Smart Government
  • Smart Industry
  • Digital Health

In connection with a planned development, the GATE Institute is seeking to appoint a Director to manage and mentor the scientific, administrative and financial activities of GATE.

Responsibilities and duties of the position:

  • Implementing and monitoring the implementation of the Board's decisions by effectively managing the day-to-day operations of the Institute.
  • Organizing and leading the Institute's initiatives, ensuring flawless execution of contractual commitments.
  • Initiating proposals for the conclusion, modification and termination of employment contracts of the administrative, technical and research staff of the Institute.
  • Seeking to improve the qualifications of the team, encouraging collaborative working and creating excellent working conditions.
  • Preparing an annual report on the Institute's activities and submitting it to the Governing Board for approval.
  • Communicating and building sustainable relationships with partner and public organizations.
  • Responsible for the effective functioning of the quality management system.
  • Ensuring that financial resources are spent appropriately.

 

Requirements for applicants:

  • University degree
  • Authoritative researcher

 

Additional requirements giving priority to the application

Education and academic achievements:

  • University degree in science, mathematics and computer science or similar area.
  • Doctorate or PhD.
  • Academic position - associate professor or professor.

Professional experience:

  • Minimum of 15 years' professional experience and seniority.
  • Minimum of 10 years' seniority and professional experience in a management position.
  • Proven track record in research with publications in internationally recognized publications.
  • Experience in leading European and national research projects.
  • Established contacts with international scientific institutions and participation in international projects and consortia.

Other requirements:

  • Proficiency of the English language.
  • Problem solving skills in a dynamic environment.
  • Strategic planning and decision-making skills.
  • Clear vision of the institute's development and ability to formulate and implement long-term strategic goals.

  • Current CV
  • Cover letter revealing your interest in the position (max. 2 pp)
  • A mandate programme (for duration of 5 years) in which the candidate describes his/her vision for the development of the Institute;
  • List of publications;
  • Copy of diplomas, certificates and qualifications;
  • A copy of a document certifying work experience and professional experience in the specified field
  • Copies of documents certifying additional qualifications, specialization, foreign language skills and competence;
  • Written references relating to employment and professional qualifications, containing the name, address and telephone number of the recommender (if the applicant so wishes);
  • Other documents at your discretion;
  • A signed and scanned declaration, which includes the following text:

Stages of the competition:

  1. Examination of the documents submitted by the candidates and admission to the procedure of those meeting the requirements set out in the notice. The successful candidates will be informed by 07.07.2024.
  2. Interviews with all eligible candidates will be held by 11.07.2024.
  3. All interviewed candidates will be informed of the outcome of the competition.
  4. The successful candidate will be appointed on a contract basis.
