The mission of the Center for the Study of Religions (CSR) at Sofia University and its activities are interdisciplinary and stretch across the structural boundaries of various faculties in the humanities and social sciences. Conducting research and educational projects, the CSR contributes to the further development of Sofia University as a leading research institution nationally and internationally along several major tracks:

• fostering the advanced study of religion from various disciplinary perspectives of the humanities and social sciences;
• working out methodologies to enhance the interaction between the research approaches of religion studies and theology;
• providing an adequate institutional framework for the working out and realization of interdisciplinary research programs;
• accumulating academic expertise that boldens Sofia University’s role in devising public policies in fields directly or indirectly involving religion.

The CSR has the following major tasks:

1. creating a methodological environment and providing an infrastructure for partnership in the study of religion among researchers coming from within different disciplines in Sofia University as well as with partners on a national and international level;
2. founding and developing research networks for the study of religion;
3. developing advanced competence in teaching, training, consultating, and project activities in this field;
4. enhancing the competence of faculty members and other experts in the field of religion studies and the history of religions;
5. creating teaching materials, databases, and research capacity in the field.

To attain its objectives, CSR fosters:

1. interdisciplinarity in the study of religion;
2. the organization of academic events – conferences, round tables, and book presentations, as well as regular seminars;
3. international cooperation in the study of religion through joint research activities, visits of outstanding international scholars, joint publications, etc.;
4. the creation, development, and dissemination of information resources;
5. the acquisition and dissemination of specialized knowledge;
6. activities related to the career development of faculty members.
